The term "cryptid" (derived from the Greek word krypto meaning "hide") is used to describe unique creatures believed to exist in specific parts of the world, but which have not been acknowledged by the scientific community at large. Classic examples of cryptids include the Loch Ness Monster of Scotland, the Sasquatch of North America, the Yeti of the Himalayas and the South American Chupacabra, to name but a few.
